Water, Sewer, and Garbage Rate Changes Coming on October 1, 2023, for Fiscal 2024
On Tuesday, September 12, 2023, the City Council voted to approve the fiscal year 2024 budget, which includes rate increases in water, garbage, and sewer services.
Water service rates will increase by 4%, and sewer service rates will increase by 10%, meaning a residential customer inside city limits with a 5/8” meter who uses 5,000 gallons of water and sewer per month will see an increase in service fees of $4.33 per month or 6.33%.
Garbage collection rates will also increase by $1 per month, raising the rate from $22.25 to $23.25 on your monthly bill. Landfill disposal fees will increase by $1 per cubic yard.
“While we understand rate increases are never welcome news, the increase in fees is necessary to keep up with inflationary increases, maintain sufficient fund balances to keep the City in good fiscal standing, and to ensure that City provided services/operations continue at a high level, said Finance Director, Todd Simoneaux. “We take the job of being good financial stewards of your tax dollars seriously, and the City has a number of planned projects outlined in the five-year Community Investment Plan (CIP) to update and upgrade aging infrastructure and capital improvements that the community will be excited to learn about.”
All the changes go into effect on October 1, 2023, the beginning of the new fiscal year.
More information about the 2024 Budget and Community Investment Plan can be found on the Finance Department tab of the city website. Water and sewer rate information can be found in the City Ordinances - Chapter 22 – utilities.
