The Beaumont Police Department has been made aware that scammers are targeting registered sex offenders and other citizens.
Various scams are on-going issues across the nation. In these particular cases, scammers are posing as law enforcement officers and contacting registered sex offenders, making the offenders believe that they have violated the terms of their registration or have a warrant.
The scammers have “spoofed” the cell phones and created the illusion that the call is coming from the Beaumont Police Department. They tell the offender that they have to go to a local convenience store and deposit money into an account on a bitcoin machine to avoid imminent arrest.
It is important for ALL citizens to know that Law Enforcement, including the Beaumont Police Department will NEVER solicit any person for any type of payment to avoid arrest or criminal enforcement action. Furthermore, the IRS, Utility Companies and ANY Legitimate business will NEVER request payment for services in the form of gift cards. Never give payment information to someone that calls you!
HANG UP on Scammers!! If you fall victim to a scam similar to this you should report it to your local law enforcement agency immediately.
