On September 29, 2022 at 5:08 p.m., two Beaumont Police Officers were flagged down at 2950 S. 8th in reference to an unresponsive infant. The officers quickly began CPR and continued life-saving measures until Beaumont EMS arrived.
The 5 month old infant was transported to a local hospital and BPD Special Crimes Detectives were notified. Results of the medical assessment indicated severe life-threatening injuries and the child was life-flighted to a Galveston area hospital.
Special Crime’s Detectives conducted a lengthy investigation and the investigation has resulted in the following facts and findings- JaKaiden Shaw suffered from severe abusive trauma that caused devastating injuries, ultimately leading to cardio-pulmonary arrest on September 29, 2022. The injuries were not accidental, they were inflicted on him. The mechanism of injury is highly indicative of “shaking” the child so violently as to cause multiple fractures, severe eye injury and brain injury. It is also indicated that the child was abused in this manner on more than one occasion. As a result of the severe abusive trauma, JaKaiden Shaw was hospitalized for one month and died on October 30, 2022.
On December 9, 2022, Special Crimes Detectives obtained two warrants for JaKaiden’s mother, Quenisha Hawkins (27 years old) in connection with his child abuse. The warrants, issued by Judge Benjamin Collins Sr., are for Injury to a Child (by act-Serious Body Injury, 1st Degree Felony) and Injury to a Child (by omission-Serious Body Injury, 1st Degree Felony) with each warrant’s bond set at $500,000 for a total of $1,000,000.
Hawkins was arrested and transported to the Jefferson County Jail.
