The City of Beaumont Establishes a New Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Department and Launches New Programs to Offer Increased Public Safety and Health Services to the Community

The City of Beaumont has created a new standalone Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Department to better serve the citizens. The new EMS Department will report directly to the City Manager, putting an increased focus on public safety and the health and welfare of the community.

The new Department is licensed to field up to nine ambulances, increasing the current capacity of 5-7 trucks. They will employ roughly 80 full-time employees once fully staffed and hope to be operational by spring, contingent upon the number of qualified applications received. Applications for all positions are being accepted immediately and can be found at Governmentjobs.com/careers/Beaumont.

City Manager Kenneth R. Williams said, “We are continually looking for ways to improve how we serve the community, and the new EMS Department will be able to offer a greater range of care and well-being for the citizens of Beaumont.”

Beaumont Fire-Rescue and the EMS Department are collaboratively working on exciting new initiatives to enhance their services, such as the creation of a new Mobile Integrated Healthcare (MIH) Program, which will expand the level of care EMS providers can offer. The program will provide individualized non-emergency medical assessments and preventive healthcare education without the need for costly and potentially unnecessary transportation or hospital visits. Innovative programs like this are being adopted by leading cities worldwide and aim to bridge the gap between providers and patients through a community health model.

"These screenings have the ability to provide an additional level of care for citizens while better allocating internal resources. They conserve valuable hospital and ambulance space while connecting individuals to the appropriate social services. It's a program we can't wait to bring to Beaumont and feel is very much needed due to the daily volume and types of 9-1-1 calls we receive," explained Max Nguyen, EMS Manager.

In the upcoming year, Beaumont Fire-Rescue will launch a Fire Cadet program for individuals aged 18–35. Recruits will be able to get hands-on training and experience before being sworn in. The Fire Cadet Program will also provide an avenue for current single-certified firefighters with advanced EMT paramedic qualifications to become dual-certified

"We are excited about the ability to reach a new group of young adults and want to show them how rewarding a career as a first responder can be while bolstering our recruiting pipeline. Training more firefighters only benefits the community," said Fire Chief Earl White.

About Beaumont Fire-Rescue: The primary function of the Fire Department is to protect life, property, and the assets of the City from any emergency through preparedness, prevention, public education, the development and enforcement of fire codes, emergency medical services, fire suppression, and hazardous material incident response.

About the City of Beaumont: Beaumont, incorporated in 1838, is a coastal city in Southeast Texas 90 miles east of Houston and 60 miles west of Louisiana. The City is home to more than 115,000 residents and is the county seat of Jefferson County, Texas. The City's economic success started with the discovery of oil more than a century ago. Now entering a new Golden Era of the Golden Triangle, it is strategically positioned for unlimited growth and potential.
