Bicycling with Butterflies Author Back on Route of Monarch Migration, Stopping in Beaumont October 12

Beaumont Public Library System is excited to announce a lunch and listen with author Sara Dykman. It is a free event, open to the public in which Dykman will be talking about her experiences with following the butterflies and also signing books that will be for sale.

After biking 10,201 miles from Mexico to Canada and back, Sara Dykman (37) became the first person to cycle the entire route of the migrating monarch butterflies. This fall she returns to the road, this time on a motorcycle, to celebrate monarchs and the publication of her book, BICYCLING WITH BUTTERFLIES (Timber Press, April 2021).

Dykman will be traveling through Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas, before continuing south to the monarchs’ overwintering grounds in Michoacan, Mexico. She will be stopping along her route to speak on behalf of monarch butterflies, whose population has seen dramatic declines in recent years. “I want to give the monarchs a voice,” Dykman explained. “I want people to know that they can help monarchs by planting milkweed, which is the only food source for the monarch caterpillars.”

Dykman will be at R. C. Miller Library at 1605 Dowlen Road on Wednesday, October 12 at 12:00PM to speak about her adventures, monarch conservation, and how everyone can help the migration. Her presentation is open to the public. Copies of Bicycling with Butterflies will be available for sale and signing.

About Sara Dykman

Sara Dykman is the founder of beyondabook.org. She works in amphibian research and as an outdoor educator. She hopes her own adventures—walking from Mexico to Canada, canoeing the Missouri River from source to sea, and cycling over 80,000 miles across North and South America (including the monarch migration trip)—will empower young and old to dream big.

About Bicycling with Butterflies

Deftly combining travel memoir and popular science, BICYCING WITH BUTTERFLIES (Timber Press, April 2021)  recounts Dykman’s inspirational ride alongside the monarchs. This National Outdoor Book Award winner is filled with optimism, energy, and hope. It is a compelling story, confirming the urgency of saving the threatened monarch migration—and the other threatened systems of nature that affect the survival of us all. “It is part science, part adventure, part love letter to nature,” Dykman explained. “I hope readers will come away with a deeper sense of connection to the land and be inspired to join the team taking care of our planet.”
