Maurine Gray Literacy Center
Housed in the same building as the Main Downtown Library, the Maurine Gray Literacy Center is located on the bottom floor. Just go through the front doors and take the stairs or elevator down.
The Maurine Gray Literacy Center helps adult students achieve their literacy or testing goals. Students are evaluated upon entering the program, and progress is closely monitored by staff.
Programs Offered
The program is affiliated with ProLiteracy America, a national literacy organization. We offer:
- Basic literacy tutoring
- English as a Second Language (ESL)
- GED preparation
- Citizenship test preparation
ProLiteracy Program Enrollment
Eligibility
To be eligible for tutoring students must:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Be willing to meet with a tutor for 1 to 4 hours a week for at least 6 months
- Provide their own transportation to an approved tutoring site
- Be able to attend a lesson at least 60 minutes
Cost
- There is a one-time registration fee of $10
- All materials and support are provided
Materials
Students can utilize Mango Languages - ESL software to help them learn English
- You will need a library card and an email address
Learning Express Library is an excellent online resource for potential GED students to see what the GED test is all about, as well as to prepare for the test itself using the tutorials and study guides available

Individuals interested in tutoring are encouraged to call the Maurine Gray Literacy Center. Tutor candidates are carefully screened to determine their understanding and knowledge of working with adult literacy students.

Anyone living within Beaumont city limits is eligible to receive a free residential library card. Bring your Texas identification (ID) with a current address to any of the 4 circulating libraries and staff would be happy to assist. Anyone from outside the city may also get a non-resident card for a nominal fee.

Yes, each library offers free access to computers and Wi-Fi. Your library card is used to access the computers. Ask a staff member to help you!

Yes, English as a Second Language Classes are offered at the Main Library in the mornings and 2 evenings a week. Please contact the Literacy Department at 409-835-7924 for a schedule of classes.
