Texas summer is back, and we are in the thick of it! Here are some quick tips and tricks to stay cool during these long summer days, both indoors and outdoors.

Staying Cool While Outdoors

Stay Hydrated

None of these tips on how to keep yourself cool in hot weather will work if you're dehydrated! Even if you do manage to cool down a bit, you'll be parched and at a much higher risk of much-needed getting heat exhaustion. Whether you're in the direct sun or not, remember to drink as much water as possible to keep yourself cool and hydrated.

Eat Frozen Berries & Fruit

One trick to stay hydrated and healthy is to freeze your fruit before you eat it! This is perfect for an on-the-go snack, and can be kept just about anywhere that is insulated, like a thermal bag or cooler.

Wrap a Wet Towel Around Your Neck

A cold, wet towel around your neck will keep you from overheating. As you rest the wet towel against your skin, the water begins to evaporate, decreasing the towel's temperature. This cooling action is transferred to the skin on your neck, lowering your body temperature and making you feel more at ease under the scorching sun.

Wear Loose, Light Colored Clothing

Dark colors absorb light, which in turn makes your body warm up faster. Try to avoid dark colors and long sleeved clothing, such as hoodies and jeans. Stick to shorts and t-shirts - the true Texas uniform!

Find Some Shade

This is a no-brainer, but it's worth mentioning that finding shade is one of the easiest ways to stay cool in the summer, especially if you can't escape indoors. No matter where you are outdoors, you're likely going to be able to find a shady area, even if it's just a small patch of shade under a tree. Shade might not seem like it will cool you down too much, but it's important to get as much coverage from the sun as possible if you're overheating.

Dip Your Feet in the Water

Did you know, dunking your feet in water will drastically cool you down! Studies show that submerging your feet in cold water up to your ankles will lower your body temperature. Fill your tub or simply get a bucket, and for some extra comfort, add a few ice cubes!

Avoid Strenuous Activities During Peak Heat

From 11 am to 3 pm, try to avoid doing physical labor and other high-output activities like mowing your lawn, cleaning your car, etc. Instead, pack up the family and find your nearest splash pad or free public pool!

Staying Cool While Indoors

Sleep on Cotton Sheets

Nothing is worse than waking up in the middle of the night in a pool of sweat, so start sleeping cool! Cotton sheets are made of natural fibers, making them a breathable, temperature-controlling fabric.

Close Interior Doors to Rooms Not in Use

Keeping interior doors open allows for airflow throughout the entire place. Closing the door to unused rooms creates a smaller space to be cooled, so the air conditioner or fan won't have to work as hard, and the room you are in will cool down faster. This will come back to thank you on your next electricity bill!

Close Window Blinds

Glass panes can only do so much, so to keep the rays out, keep your blinds closed during the day. This will block out unnecessary heat, and your air conditioner won't have to work as hard either!
